Redundancy

Being put at risk of redundancy is never easy. Whether you’re facing individual consultation or part of a collective process, your rights matter. Our team is here to check how fair the process really is, challenge poor decisions, and make sure you’re treated properly from start to finish. If you’re unsure where you stand, we’ll help you work it out.

Review consultation letters, criteria, and scores

We check every document carefully, test how fair the scoring is, and advise on legal compliance and transparency.

Challenge unfair selection or poor consultation

We raise the right objections, ask the tough questions, demand disclosure, and push for a better outcome where the process hasn’t been fair.

Assess legal claims and potential compensation

If you’ve got a claim, we’ll tell you and estimate compensation. We will look at unfair dismissal, discrimination, breach of contract and missed consultation duties.

Negotiate redundancy pay and settlement terms

From enhanced pay to clearer references, we know how to negotiate packages that leave you in a stronger position.

Representation as tribunal

If your case goes to tribunal, we handle ACAS Early Conciliation, file claims, pursue protective awards, all the way to the final hearing.

Protect your wider employment rights

We make sure you get the right notice, full holiday pay, and fair treatment when it comes to bonuses and share schemes (like LTIPs).

Questions we’re often asked

What is redundancy?

Redundancy is when your job is no longer needed because of business changes like a closure or restructure.

Do I have a right to consultation?

Yes. You must be consulted individually and meaningfully. If 20 or more redundancies are proposed, a collective process is required.

How is redundancy selection decided?

Employers should use fair and objective criteria, scored consistently with clear evidence.

What redundancy pay could I receive?

You’re entitled to statutory redundancy pay. You may also be entitled to enhanced pay, depending on your contract or what’s negotiated.

Can I challenge my redundancy?

Yes. If the process was unfair, the criteria discriminatory, or the consultation inadequate, you can challenge it.

What’s ACAS Early Conciliation?

It’s a mandatory pre-claim process to try settling employment disputes without a tribunal. We handle this on your behalf.

Georgia was incredibly helpful throughout the process of reaching a settlement with a previous employer. Georgia took the time to understand my personal situation and provided clear, considerate, and professional guidance at every stage. Her support made a complex process much easier to navigate, and I felt reassured knowing I was in capable hands.

Chris is a great listener, clear communicator and, in my opinion, a genuinely good, kind human being. I have no hesitation in recommending Blacks in Leeds for any legal matters you may have; you'll be in good hands.

I have dealt with Chris Allen recently concerning some rather upsetting and extremely delicate matters. Chris and the team have proved to be reassuring, down to earth and absolute consummate professionals.

Blacks helped us think beyond the sessions by supporting us to consider how the legislative changes translate into day to day behaviours and what this means for our culture in anticipation for our policy to be launched. This has supported follow on training delivery internally surrounding misogyny, misogynoir and trans-misogyny.

We had an excellent experience working with Blacks. From the moment we reached out to request training, they responded quickly and took the time to meet with us early on to understand our needs and the wider organisational context. They were patient and flexible as we worked through our planning.

Ellie was absolutely amazing through the whole process. She made me feel at ease and was very efficient at replying to my emails and queries. I would also like to say a thank you to Jemma who was the first one I engaged with and made me feel comfortable and less anxious.

I worked with Tom during a very stressful and time-sensitive settlement, and I’m genuinely so grateful for his support. From the start, he was calm, practical and incredibly thorough, which made a huge difference at a point when everything felt overwhelming.

The service was 11 out of 10! Ellie kept me on the straight and narrow. She navigated the legal side and the emotional side incredibly well. She advised me brilliantly and I couldn’t be happier with that

Euan Lawrence helped me with a HR issue with a former employee, and I was extremely impressed by his professionalism and the clarity of his advice in translating complex legal ease for the less legally minded individuals such as myself – I would fully recommend.
